¹ SAD or Seasonal Affective Disorder is a type of mood disorder that mostly occurs in autumn and winter in areas that have a noticeable decrease of sunlight during these seasons. That might affect a person’s mood, energy, ability to concentrate or sleeping patterns. SAD light therapy boxes are one of the treatments used to ease these symptoms. These boxes emit 10 000 lux of light, an amount that is about 100 times brighter than ordinary indoor light. Researchers believe that exposure to a strong light helps to reduce levels of melatonin and increase the production of serotonin (a hormone that affects your mood).
² Mosses are flowerless, non-vascular plants that absorb water and nutrients through their leaves and intake carbon dioxide and sunlight to produce photosynthesis. They do not have proper roots, only threadlike rhizoids, resembling roots that anchor them to their substrate. Mosses are one of the most resilient plants that are able to survive and adjust to the harshest environments. They help ecosystems by filtering and retaining water, stabilising the soil and removing CO2 from the atmosphere. They are also reliable indicators of air pollution as they acquire most of their nutrients directly from the atmosphere.
